Recently Rahat Fateh Ali Khan played the arena in my home city of Leeds – four hours of liquid gold vocalisation. I was dazzled by the burnished fretwork of Rahat’s chalat phirat [musical improvisation] as well as the discipline and transcendent tones of his humnawaa [backing singers].

Yesterday millions of us in India sat breathless under threat of a super-cyclone and I feared why it had to be 13th October, I never wanted to remember this day as one which devastated Indian lives…. the worst is over and the loss of life was almost null, miraculous, amazing right … this day remained blessed as it was supposed to be …

13 is also considered the most unlucky number, so it had to be balanced by nature making it lucky too… so there is the lucky 13 & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan…
