Ustad Dildar Hussain was born in 1957 in Kasoor Pakistan. Ustad Dildar Hussain has remained the best ata wala tabla nawaz of the century. Remarkable success in his life has included 30 years with Khansab Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan– internationally renown legend of Qawwali music and holder of the Guiness Book of world Records for most recorded and released music.

Ustad Dildar Hussain has also succeeded with international fusion projects with various artist such as Michael Brooks, Peter Gabriel, and has performed for the soundtracks of Dead Man Walking, Bandit Queen, Last Temptation Of Christ. Ustad Dildarji learned tabla from Ustad Allah Rakha Khan—Father and teacher of Ustad Zakir Hussain and the greatest tablji of the last generation.

Ustad Dildar’s first performance was in India in 1969 before he joined Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s Qawwali party in 1971. Along with Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, Nusrat’s brother, Dildar had been a member of the party since its formation. Dildar does not play the traditional tabla that can be seen in Hindustani classical music but instead plays a combination of “jori” as the treble, and “dhamma” as the bass to create a deeper, warmer sound than the modern tabla set creates. Today, he can sometimes be seen accompanying Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He is also the tabla master of the renowned young western tabla wala Amana Chisty Qawwal.

  2. Dildar Hussain is a maestro — one of the most essential people in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s group. It is ironic that he was always stuck right at the back in an obscure position.
